PROFILE OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY IN AUSTRALIA
These reports are from a series of Religious Education Occasional Papers on religion by Prof. James Athanasou. They deal with theoretical, policy and empirical issues related to faith.
The information in these two reports is derived from the 2016 national census.
The purpose of this report is to document some basic demographic statistics on Eastern Orthodox and Greek Orthodox in Australia and is in three parts.
- A macro-perspective on religion in the population;
- A more specific meso-outline of Eastern Orthodox in Australia and;
- A micro-analysis of Greek Orthodox in Australia.
The focus of this report is the Greek Orthodox in Australia who comprise the largest component of the Greek-Australian community as well as the largest proportion of the Eastern Orthodox faithful in Australia. The purpose is to provide a social profile of Greek Orthodox in Australia based on the official data. This information can serve as a benchmark for planning community services on the basis of evidence rather than intuition.
