As we enter the Nativity Fast, (Friday 15 November) we have a blessed opportunity to draw closer to God and prepare our hearts for the joyous celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. This period of spiritual struggle and renewal is a time for us to deepen our faith and live out our Orthodox Christian beliefs more fully.
Here are some ways we can embrace this journey together:
- Daily Prayer: Let us establish a routine of daily prayer, creating a dedicated space in our homes where we can focus on our conversations with God.
- Participation in the Sacraments: Regularly partake in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession, to nourish our souls and maintain a close relationship with God.
- Reading Scripture and Spiritual Texts: Make it a habit to read the Bible and other spiritual writings, which will guide us and deepen our understanding of the faith.
- Fasting: Observe the Nativity Fast with dedication. This 40-day period is a time for spiritual discipline, focusing on prayer, repentance, and abstaining from certain foods to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s birth.
- Charity and Service: Engage in acts of charity and service, helping those in need and being active in our church community, reflecting Christ’s love in our actions.
- Living the Virtues: Strive to embody Christian virtues such as love, humility, patience, and forgiveness in our daily interactions.
- Regular Church Attendance: Attend church services regularly, including feast days and important liturgical events. The liturgical life of the Church sanctifies us, drawing us closer to God and transforming our lives through the grace of the Holy Spirit.
- Spiritual Guidance: Seek guidance from your spiritual father, who can provide personalised advice and support for our spiritual journey.
- Family and Community Life: Foster a Christian environment at home and within our community, praying together as a family and supporting each other in living out our faith.
- Continuous Learning: Always seek to learn more about our faith through lectures, books, and study groups, deepening our understanding and commitment.
May this Nativity Fast be a time of spiritual growth and renewal for all of us. Let us support one another in our journey towards a closer relationship with God and a deeper understanding of His love and salvation.
